Police Beat
Police Beat is compiled from reports released to the media by area law enforcement agencies. Anyone arrested is presumed innocent until proved guilty in court.

Springfield firefighters on Wednesday were able to stop a garage fire from spreading to a nearby house where a man was sleeping.

Firefighters were called to the 1100 block of Indiana Avenue about 4 a.m. after a resident noticed a possible fire in an alley. Firefighters found that an unattached garage was enveloped in flames, a house about ten feet away was being threatened by the fire.

"The fire had melted the siding off the back of the house, and heat had broken some of the windows," said Deputy Division Chief Bob Reside, spokesman for the Springfield Fire Department.

At least one person was asleep inside.
