But two years into the program at Rutgers University, Cleary knew it wasn't for her.

She told her advisor she had thought about being a science teacher, and she decided to pursue an education degree.

And it's that path that has brought Cleary to her latest career milestone as principal of Linden High School.

She is the first woman to hold the position since Lida M. Ebbert served as the principal from 1910 to 1952. A plaque in the high school was dedicated to Ebbert in 1960.

"I don't even think of that," said Cleary. "I have a job before me to do and I do the best I can to make it happen."

"I just want to make sure every child has some sort of goal set and they work toward that goal and we challenge them to reach their fullest potential," added Cleary, who started the new job Sept.
